For those craving a quieter escape, the southern beaches like Praia do Rei and Praia da Bela Vista provide serene retreats in more natural settings. As you continue down the coastline, you’ll reach Fonte da Telha and Lagoa de Albufeira, each with its own unique charm.

3.1. Surfing

Surfing is at the heart of Costa da Caparica’s appeal, drawing surfers from all over the world. Praia da Mata, Praia Nova, and Praia de São João are among the top spots, each offering distinct wave conditions that cater to different skill levels.

It’s worth keeping in mind that each season offers a different wave experience. In spring and fall, you’ll find excellent swells and fewer crowds, making these seasons perfect for surfers seeking a bit more space and a challenge. The weather is typically mild, adding to the appeal.

Summer brings smaller, gentler waves, particularly at Praia de São João, making it an ideal time for beginners to hone their skills. For the more experienced surfers, winter offers powerful swells, though the colder temperatures are something to be prepared for.

Throughout the year, Praias da Costa da Caparica delivers consistent surf conditions, ensuring that surfers of all levels can find the right waves to ride, no matter the season.

3.2. Kitesurfing

The spacious beaches along Costa da Caparica are particularly well-suited to kitesurfing, thanks to the steady breezes that blow from March to November making Costa da Caparica a prime destination for both novice and experienced kitesurfers.

For beginners, Costa da Caparica’s shallow waters near the shore provide a safe and controlled environment to practice and build confidence. For more experienced kitesurfers, the wide, open expanses of water combined with consistent winds offer the perfect setting to refine skills and experience the thrill of high-speed rides.

Whether you’re new to the sport or a seasoned pro, this coastal gem offers everything needed for an unforgettable kitesurfing adventure.

3.3. Golfing

If you’re a golf enthusiast looking for a premier destination near Lisbon, consider visiting the Aroeira Golf Course, the largest golfing complex in the area. Just a few kilometers from Costa da Caparica Beach, Aroeira combines easy accessibility with top-tier golfing facilities, all set within a tranquil, scenic environment.

The complex has two championship courses, each providing a different experience. Aroeira I is surrounded by dense pine forests, making it both beautiful and challenging. This course requires precise shots and careful planning, as players navigate through the natural landscape.

Aroeira II, on the other hand, is flatter and more open, with several water hazards that add both visual appeal and difficulty. The lakes around the last nine holes make for an interesting game, especially when the wind picks up, adding to the challenge.

Beyond golf, Aroeira is part of a larger leisure complex, making it a great spot for a well-rounded day out. Its location near Costa da Caparica’s beaches means you can easily combine a round of golf with some time by the sea, giving you the best of both worlds.

4. How to get to Costa da Caparica?

Costa da Caparica is easily accessible from Lisbon, making it a favorite destination for both locals and tourists looking for a quick escape to the beach. The most convenient way to get there is by car, with a drive of about 20 minutes via the IC20 highway. This route not only gets you there quickly but also offers picturesque views as you cross the iconic Ponte 25 de Abril bridge before arriving at the sandy shores of Costa da Caparica.

If you prefer not to drive, public transportation is a reliable alternative. Buses regularly run between Lisbon and Costa da Caparica, with departures from major spots like Praça de Espanha and Areeiro. These buses drop you off close to the main beach areas, providing a hassle-free option that avoids the need for parking, especially during the busy summer months.

During peak season, from mid-June to early September, traffic to and from the beaches can get heavy, particularly on weekends. To make the most of your visit and avoid the crowds, consider starting your day early or planning to leave later in the evening when traffic eases. This not only reduces travel stress but also gives you more time to fully enjoy the beaches at a more leisurely pace.

4.1. By Bus

Traveling by bus is a convenient and practical way to reach Costa da Caparica from Lisbon.

One of the main options is the Carris Metropolitana Bus 3710, which departs from Avenida Padre Manuel da Nóbrega near Praça Francisco Sá Carneiro in Areeiro. This bus runs every 10 to 30 minutes, depending on the time of day, and takes about 55 minutes to reach Costa da Caparica. The route is direct, making it an easy option for those who prefer not to drive.

Another option is Bus 3709, which operates less frequently and only on weekdays. It starts at Parque Eduardo VII near Praça Marquês de Pombal and ends at Praça Padre Manuel Bernardes in the town center of Costa da Caparica. From this terminal, it’s just a short 10-minute walk to the beach, making it a convenient choice for accessing Caparica Beach.

During the high season, more buses run from Campo Grande, specifically catering to those heading to Praias da Costa da Caparica. Alternatively, outside peak times, you can take a ferry from Praça do Comércio across the Tagus River to Cacilhas, where connecting buses to Costa da Caparica are available.

4.2. By Car

Driving to Costa da Caparica is a practical choice, offering ease, beautiful scenery, and the freedom to explore the coastal beauty at your own pace. From Lisbon’s city center, it typically takes about 20 minutes to reach Costa da Caparica by car, making it a convenient option for both spontaneous day trips and longer planned visits.

The journey begins by crossing the iconic 25 de Abril Bridge, a suspension bridge offering stunning views over the Tagus River as it connects Lisbon to the southern shores. Once across, clear signs guide drivers towards Caparica or Praias (Beaches), making it easy to find your destination.

As you approach Costa da Caparica, each beach is well signposted off the main road, helping you locate your preferred spot with ease. Ample parking facilities are available near each entrance, which is particularly helpful during the busy peak season when spaces can fill up quickly.

5. Where to stay in Costa da Caparica?

Costa da Caparica, unlike the more internationally known spots like Cascais and Estoril, is a summer destination primarily favored by locals, which means there are fewer accommodation options compared to its more tourist-heavy neighbors.

However, if you’re looking for an authentic Portuguese beach experience close to Lisbon, Costa da Caparica has several great choices. Here are some of my picks:

  • TRYP by Wyndham Lisboa Caparica Mar: located just 150m from the beach, this hotel offers an outdoor pool and rooms with private balconies that offer mountain or ocean views. Each room is equipped with air conditioning, free WiFi, satellite TV, and a hairdryer. The hotel also features two on-site restaurants and a year-round bar. During the summer, additional options include the Lobby Garden Bar, the Red Dragon Beach Club on Caparica Beach, and the Mateus Terraza rooftop bar, perfect for sunset views.
  • Crowne Plaza: located in Capuchos, just 3 kilometers from Costa da Caparica’s beaches, this hotel caters to both relaxation and business needs. It features indoor and outdoor pools, a spa that includes a hot tub, Turkish bath, sauna, and gym facilities. It’s an ideal spot to unwind after a day at the nearby beaches or exploring Lisbon. The rooms feature balconies with views of the ocean or pool, and some apartments come with kitchen facilities for added convenience.
  • INATEL Caparica: situated close to Costa da Caparica’s beaches and surrounded by forested areas, this hotel offers a peaceful retreat while still being near coastal activities. The rooms are air-conditioned, with modern decor, parquet floors, minibars, and satellite TVs. Guests can also enjoy an outdoor pool, a restaurant serving Portuguese and international cuisine, and a bar, all complemented by a 24/7 reception to ensure a pleasant stay.

6. About the town Costa da Caparica

Costa da Caparica, just south of Lisbon, is known for its long coastline and beach-focused lifestyle. In the summer, the town gets busy as people come to enjoy the sun and surf. The town has mostly modern 20th-century condos, which are practical but not as charming as what you might find in places like Cascais or Sesimbra.

Even though it doesn’t have many major attractions, Costa da Caparica is popular with Portuguese visitors, mainly because of its beaches.

As you head south from the town center, the feel of the beaches changes. The ones closer to town are crowded and lively, attracting both locals and tourists. But if you go further south, you’ll find quieter beaches surrounded by pine forests.

Costa da Caparica also has a big seafront park and a nice promenade for walking along the beach. These spots are great for relaxing and enjoying views of the Atlantic Ocean.

While it might not be as scenic as other coastal towns in Portugal, Costa da Caparica’s focus on the beach and its close proximity to Lisbon make it a good choice for both short trips and longer stays during the summer.

Get ready for an amazing beach vacation!

In the end, Costa da Caparica is all about finding your perfect spot along its 15km stretch of dune-backed sands. Just south of Lisbon, this coastline offers something for everyone, from surfing, family-friendly fun, or a lively night out.

And that’s what I love about Costa da Caparica: its ability to cater to such a diverse mix of people. You can find a spot that feels just right for you, whether it’s for surfing, socializing, or simply enjoying a quiet moment by the ocean.

Costa da Caparica truly offers a little slice of paradise for everyone who visits. So, if you’re planning a quick getaway or a longer stay, this stretch of coast just might become your favorite spot near Lisbon!
